OK – das ist hypothetisch. Hätte er es gekonnt? Wollen ist das eine, können das andere.

McGovern waere in Vietnam geblieben? I don’t think so…

Warum gleich so extrem? Er ist ein gemäßigt konservativer Politiker mit recht konkreten Vorstellungen einer “richtigen” Sicherheits- und Außenpolitik – so wie alle US-Präsidenten seit Roosevelt (wenn man Carter mal herauslässt, der keine konkreten Vorstellungen hatte). Bei ihm weiß man, woran man ist. Das ist ein großer Vorteil gegenüber Miss Clinton, die militärisch ebenfalls “proakitv” denkt, aber unduchschau- und unberechenbar ist. McCain wird ein typischer US-Präsident werden, da ist mir nicht bange. Wer hat die USA aus Vietnam heraus geholt? Richtig – Nixon, ein waschechter Konservativer. Kennedy, Johnson oder McGovern hätten dies nicht getan. Also, abwarten.

Ja ja, ich weiß – aber seine “sentimentale” Ader scheint ja nicht lange gehalten zu haben, wenn er sich wenige Tage später freiwillig auf einen Träger versetzen lässt, dessen Piloten extra harte Aufgaben zu erfüllen haben.

Zum meinem McCain-Zitat: Das hat er (lt. Wikipedia) 1 oder 2 Tage nach dem Feuer gesagt.

“[] McCain was upset with the idea of waiting that long. An officer from the USS Oriskany requested volunteers for combat duty aboard his ship. They had lost a number of pilots and were undermanned. McCain signed up immediately. [] On Sept. 30, 1967, McCain requested immediate duty on the Oriskany.The Oriskany during Operation Rolling Thunder lost 38 pilots and 60 aircraft. In 1967 alone one third of the squadrons pilots were either killed or captured. Of the 60 planes lost 29 were A-4s. Every one of the original fifteen A-4s were destroyed. It was indeed a very dangerous ship for McCain to transfer to.”
